About Hoops on the Ave

Hoops on the Ave is a community basketball event created by the Mizzle House Foundation to bring people together through sports, mentorship, and positive community engagement. What started as a local vision has grown into one of the area’s most recognized summer events, creating a space where youth, families, athletes, and community members can connect in a positive environment.

The event was inspired by the mission of Mizzle House founder Charlie “Mizzle” Makoa, who believed the community needed more opportunities, programs, and safe spaces for youth. Alongside Andrew “Drew” Davis and other community leaders, that vision turned into a movement focused on uplifting the next generation and creating opportunities both on and off the court.

Through a strong local partnership with Wicomico County Recreation, Parks & Tourism, Hoops on the Ave has continued to expand its reach and impact throughout the community. The partnership has helped strengthen the event’s mission of creating safe, positive, and engaging opportunities for youth and families across the Eastern Shore.

Since launching, Hoops on the Ave has continued to grow each year, bringing together competitive basketball, entertainment, local vendors, community resources, and youth engagement. Entering its 5th year, the event has become more than just a tournament — it has become a tradition for the community and a platform that highlights unity, culture, and mentorship throughout the region.

Through the continued growth of Hoops on the Ave, Mizzle House has also expanded into additional youth programming, including the growing Mizzle Kidz Academy and other community initiatives designed to support and inspire local youth. As the organization continues to evolve, the goal remains the same: to create lasting opportunities and a positive impact throughout the community for years to come.
